Nebraska Game and Parks Commission
Mark Porath is the Aquatic Habitat Program Manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Working as a fisheries biologist in Arizona and Nebraska, he became involved in numerous habitat restoration and enhancement projects with a wide range of partners from state and federal agencies, NGO’s, local governments, and private landowners.  As a fellow of the National Conservation Leadership Institute he now represents Nebraska within the Reservoir Habitat Partnership, and most recently joined the AFS-TWS Synthesis Team in developing science communication and policy strategies for ecosystem transformation.  Nebraska’s Aquatic Habitat Program is unique in that is uses a dedicated portion of a fishing license fee to leverage grant funding for projects that are a priority for anglers by addressing the foundational habitat functions of aquatic systems.  The program has been very successful and highly celebrated as it has partnered with 70+ funding sources to rehabilitate or restore aquatic habitat at over 120 waters and a cost of $73 M.  Angler and partner satisfaction have been the primary metric of success over the last 21 years, and the main drivers evolving the program to expand its focus and mission.
